CODE OF CONDUCT
DH BENELUX 2026
Core principles
We welcome all individual researchers, heritage professionals, students and interested citizens to participate, regardless of personal background or institutional affiliation. Our priority is to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone. We uphold academic freedom and the right to free expression within the bounds of respectful dialogue and academic integrity.
Managing disagreement
All participants are expected to treat each other with respect. Disagreements should be expressed constructively and without personal attacks. Harassment, discrimination, or intimidation (whether verbal, physical, or virtual) will not be tolerated. Deliberate disruption of talks, sessions, or social events is prohibited. Participants must comply with Dutch law and the House Rules of Maastricht University.
Addressing sensitive topics
The conference is a space for academic exchange. Discussions of social controversies and political conflicts should remain within the context of academic research and retain a clear link to the overall concerns of the Digital Humanities community. We do not permit the dissemination of printed materials that do not pertain to the themes of the conference and do not allow political posters or banners where they are not directly linked to research presented at the conference. Session chairs and organizers reserve the right to intervene if discussions become disrespectful or disruptive.
Asking for help
If you experience or witness harassment, discrimination, or disruption, please contact the members of the local organizing committee during the event. They will be wearing distinctive badges and/or lanyards. Reports can be made in person or via email to dhbenelux2026@gmail.com and will be handled confidentially. Violations may result in warnings, expulsion from the conference, or, in severe cases, legal action.
Practical measures
UM security and local authorities will be informed of the conference and available to assist if needed. While the conference is open to registered participants, organizers will monitor access to UM facilities and social events to prevent unauthorized disruptions. A quiet room will be available for participants who feel overwhelmed or unsafe.
